2020 has certainly been an incredibly trying and uncertain time in our history. So far Australia has endured searing hot temperatures, devastating flooding, unprecedented bushfires and now the COVID-19 pandemic is sweeping around the world. It seems as though we are going from one crisis to another. The impact on our communities has been immense and it seems that it will only get worse as the virus spreads.
It is clear that during these troubled times fear, doubt, selfishness and even hate have manifested in many people’s actions. We only need to look at the panic hoarding that is taking place across the country. But is this really the reaction we should be having? Of course not! Many people have described these actions as ‘un-Australian’; however, we would perceive it as being ‘un-Christian’.
So what should our focus be on? Our focus should be on our Saviour Jesus and on what he has shown us, taught us and ultimately did for us on the cross. This is a time when we should be showing compassion to our community, not selfishness; a time for serving those around us, not putting ourselves first; and a time to be shining our light in the darkness. What a wonderful opportunity we have to share the saving message of Easter, in which we can find healing, peace, joy and eternal life!
In these troubled times, remember to pray for each other constantly and to follow the example Jesus has shown us all.
